No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
